Eastern California Museum Rebuilds Historic West Wing, Targets New Gallery for Spring 2027

INDEPENDENCE, Inyo County — The Eastern California Museum is carrying out a significant gallery project at its historic west wing, with a new visitor experience expected in spring 2027, according to Inyo County.

The museum’s official information page says construction began in March 2026 as part of a project called Re-Imagine Eastern California Museum. The work is supported by a grant through the California Cultural and Historical Endowment’s museum program.

What remains available during construction

The county says the Indigenous Lifeways Gallery, reference library, research files and museum bookstore remain open. Researchers should make appointments in advance using the museum’s published research request form. Group tours may also require advance coordination.

The museum is at 155 North Grant Street, Independence, CA 93526. Its regular hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Mondays and county holidays are closed. The listed phone number is 760-878-0258.

The museum’s online collection portal, known as the HUB, contains more than 10,000 items according to the county. That provides a research option for readers who cannot visit in person.

The spring 2027 date is a project target, not a confirmed opening date. Check the museum’s latest update before planning a trip specifically for the rebuilt wing.
