Independence Landfill Opens on Thursdays and Sundays, County Says

INDEPENDENCE, Inyo County — Residents and contractors planning waste disposal in Independence should check the county’s published schedule before loading a vehicle: the local landfill is not listed as open every day.

Inyo County’s Solid Waste directory lists the Independence Landfill as open Thursday and Sunday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.. The site is described as being at the south end of Independence, on the east side of U.S. Highway 395. The separate county recycling page shows the same schedule.

Before visiting

Residents should contact county Solid Waste staff to confirm acceptance rules, current disposal fees and whether a particular load—such as construction debris, electronic equipment or hazardous household products—must be handled elsewhere. The county lists 760-873-7191 as the main office contact.

Do not assume the landfill has the same opening days as Big Pine’s transfer station or other sites in the county. Different facilities publish different schedules.

Holiday and road considerations

Landfill services can change during official county holidays or operational disruptions, especially in remote areas. Secure loads during transportation and check the county’s current notices before making a long drive.
